At
the south of the region, crossing the Strait of Magellan, we find
the legendary Island of Tierra del Fuego welcoming visitors to the
quiet Porvenir city. In the Northern part of the island you can see
the facilities belonging to the oilfields of the National Oil Company.
On the Southern area, the landscape transforms from vast open pampas
covered with bunch grass to dense forest that covers most of the area.
In the summer time, it is usual to see large flocks of sheep herded
by shepherds with their distinctive sheepdogs. This island was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan and its first inhabitants were the Ona people who lived from hunting guanaco (a lama-like animal) and foxes. They would dress and build houses with leather from these animals. Later, when gold was discovered, the island was explored and, after the gold period ended, most miners became cattle farmers. |
